Royal Sudeley Essence
The Royal Sudeley Essence products have been inspired by the castle’s romantic Tudor history. They use a unique combination of the finest organic ingredients to create magical scented memories of Sudeley Castle.
In Medieval and Tudor times, fragrant and medicinal herbs were grown in Sudeley’s Physic Gardens and applied in a variety of ways, typically scattered in rooms, worn in pomanders and infused into oils and potions for softening and scenting the skin.
The castle has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors over the years and many have asked what they can take home with them as a special memory of their visit to Sudeley Castle. What better souvenir of a magical experience than a scent?
This special idea came into fruition when Sudeley Castle & Gardens’ owner, Elizabeth, Lady Ashcombe, began working with her son Henry Dent-Brocklehurst and his wife Lili, owners of an established botanical firm in Hawaii, called Island Essence. With the team of experienced perfumers, they developed a line of original products inspired by archival Tudor documents and Sudeley Castle’s romantic history but with a modern and ‘exotic’ touch.
Island Essence products are made on Maui and use the finest quality ingredients that nourish, soothe and moisturise the skin with organic plant extracts unique to the Hawaiian Islands. It is with pride that the first three ‘Royal Sudeley Essence’ products are made by the family owned business.
TUDOR ROSES — sweet musk rose, amber and violet notes, evoke fragrant memories of Queen Katherine Parr and her ladies in the Tudor Court.
LAVENDER — traditionally known for its calming and soothing qualities, this scent is tempered with organic Vanilla Orchid creating a luscious note to this timeless essence.
CITRUS AND SPICE — archival sources inspire this zesty and exotic aroma which energises and refreshes the spirit.
Sudeley Castle & Gardens was rescued from ruin in the 19th Century by John and William Dent, the wealthy founders of Dents Gloves. Today we stock a range of gloves and other fine leather items from Dents.
