Lady Ashcombe Honoured with Prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award

Elizabeth, Lady Ashcombe of Sudeley Castle and Gardens has been recognised on the world stage for her extraordinary lifelong dedication to one of Britain’s most treasured historic landmarks.

Lady Ashcombe, who has served as Chatelaine of Sudeley Castle for more than half a century - making her the longest‑serving custodian in the castle’s 1,000‑year history - was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Women’s Business Awards in London in December. The accolade celebrates her remarkable commitment to heritage, the arts, conservation and her lifetime of commitment to Sudeley Castle.

Now in its 12th year, the annual awards ceremony is described as a global celebration of the achievements, innovation and impact of women in business, drawing together leaders, entrepreneurs and changemakers from across the world.

American by birth, Lady Ashcombe first arrived at Sudeley in 1962 to marry Mark Dent‑Brocklehurst, whose family has cared for the castle since the 1830s. Following Mark’s untimely death, she dedicated herself to preserving Sudeley as both a family home and a beloved visitor attraction.

Under her stewardship, more than four million visitors have explored the castle and its grounds, experiencing first‑hand the stories and history of this fascinating site. Her vision has shaped many of Sudeley’s most popular tours, exhibitions and events, and she has played a key role in promoting British heritage internationally, particularly in the United States.

In their tribute, the award presenters said:

“Lady Ashcombe’s name is woven into the very fabric of British heritage and community life. As custodian of the iconic Sudeley Castle and Gardens, she has not only preserved one of our nation’s most treasured landmarks but has also opened its doors and heart to the public, ensuring its stories and beauty continue to inspire generations.”

They continued:

“Her work extends far beyond the walls of the castle. Through her dedication to the arts, conservation and charitable causes, she has shown what it means to use one’s platform for good -nurturing culture, empowering others and bringing people together. Lady Ashcombe, your vision and generosity have built bridges between history and modernity, tradition and progress, privilege and purpose.”

Reflecting on the honour, Lady Ashcombe said: “Fifty‑four years ago I started looking after Sudeley Castle. I’m still there, I’m still amazed by it, and this is a real, real privilege to have won this award.”
